Sunrise Ranch Property Master Plan

As part of a team led by SWA Group, PACE developed concepts for water infrastructure within the Sunrise Ranch Property to further the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District’s goals of improving water infrastructure and diversifying their water supply portfolio. PACE evaluated the property’s existing water infrastructure and identified opportunities to secure, store, and manage water for long-term reliability and sustainability.

The Sunrise Ranch property resides in an ideal location for water supply management. A number of water resources are available in the vicinity, including the Santa Ana River, State Water Project infrastructure, local groundwater, and Mill Creek. By increasing storage opportunities, San Bernardino Valley will be able to increase water supply resilience, improve independence from import sources, support critical groundwater recharge programs, provide flexibility in water supply management strategies, and establish redundancy to support operational reliability.

Large-scale concepts were developed for two main reservoirs that could provide up to 3,450 acre-feet of water storage within the Sunrise Ranch property. Designed at specific elevations within the foothills terrain, the reservoirs could provide cohesive operation with existing local and regional conveyance facilities. Easy access to supply pipes and gravity flow to existing pump stations are key components of the reservoir concept. A number of improvement alternatives were also devised to maximize capture, conveyance, and storage opportunities.

The conceptual reservoirs could provide the opportunity for storage during times of abundance and additional supply during times of shortage. Ultimately, stored water could be conveyed directly to customers or to regional groundwater recharge areas. This additional water could maximize groundwater potential of existing recharge facilities throughout the year.
